Working in Singapore, living in Malaysia?

Can this be done?
Is it feasible and what would you need to do to live in Malaysia?
We have been told by a Malaysian friend in Oz that we would be better off living in Malaysia than Singapore due to cost of housing etc.
Just wondering if anyone has done this and the pros & cons off doing so ie. commute to city and schools etc.

It can be done, just takes more time to get to work

I knew an Indian guy that was doing it and he seemd fine with the comute. I've also known people who live in Batam and commute everyday.

Don't know what the visa arrangement was, but it can be done.

I think you get slugged with a $20 (please correct me if i'm wrong) fee every time you drive a car from Malaysia to Singapore if your car is registered in Malaysia. (Do the math - that's $400 per 4 weeks)

If your car is registered in Singapore, it's much more expensive to purchase & I think Malaysia will charge a fee for bringing a SG registered car to Malaysia every time you cross the border. Not sure if the new higher fee has started yet.

The alternative would be to catch the bus across ther border, but consider also how early you would need to wake in order to prepare for work every day.

Personally, I think it's more worthwhile finding a residence close to the MRT/bus lines within Singapore. I'd rather pay a little extra and save the headache.

The RM20 per exit for foreign cars has been scrapped....... indefinately. This is on the back of "Visit Malaysia 2007" where the government used the excuse that asking people to pay a "departure tax" during the tourism promotion would not intice people to actually come in.

With regards the S$20 per day for bringing in a Malaysian car to Singapore, this is correct. But i don't think there is such a fee for motorbikes, or if there is they will be much lower, judging by the thousands upon thousands that come in every morning.

it's really crazy to do that !

you would spare some money, but you would lose a lot of time ...

or buy a scooter-motorbike to avoid the crazy jams ... but it's quite dangerous to drive into the motorbikes flow ...

be sure you are ready to spend a lot of time on the road

I've heard about this too. You could potentially live near the second link, drive a Malaysian car and be in the CBD in an hour or so saving thousands a month on housing. Cars in Malaysia are cheaper, not to mention petrol. Register your maid there, and save on the levy...

I don't know though, it seems like a lot of hassle. (Imagine when you want to get a few drinks after work! You can't drive your car home, so what do you do? Take a cab?! It could be a real pain after a while, I think.)

Drink in JB..... it's also half the price.
