I meant the fact the rents were rising they were complaining, they have nice lifestyles still out here, maybe have to drop a few nights out, but still a bloody good lifestyle by a lot of peoples standards!! yet on the other hand they pay maids a paltry sum with no complaints at all...they cant have it all their own way.
the big word you used was GREED and i am afraid our society is rife with it as people seek more and more money and things. as i said in an earlier post, they are driven to it, by governments who say it is ok....well the UK is feeling the brunt of all the effects right now as peoples spirits get dampened and broken as a result and the kids start to fight back against society, that they feel has wronged them, they take drugs, drink, act aggressively, rob, steal and cheat just to feel good...bloddy sad state of affairs
There is nothing wrong with wanting a decent lifestyle, but at what cost??? piece of mind and contentment is surely a bit more important?

Unfortunately, I'll have to go to UK embassy for half a year just to get a visa to go to UK and check that, but I'll take your word for it

But I do agree with you, I don't know how people are going to hold up with all the crap like mobiles, hdtv's, cars, etc. being pushed as a must-haves from everywhere.

I think that jockney has a good point that you can live a reasonable life without a maid, and still enjoy Singapore.

For myself I am OK with a more simple lifestyle, and I cannot afford to pay SGD 7000 in rental and SGD 2000 for a car, and SGD X for a maid.
Does local Singaporeans have that kind expenses?

I am just looking for an apartment with reasonable standard and not too far away from the city. Surely it must be possible to find a 2BR apartment for less than 3k?

Any advice is welcome.

If you want a clean place with decent furniture, then for the east side of singapore, the only places within your budget are in Changi; maybe in Simei or Tampines/Pasir Ris if you're lucky. Don't know much about west side, maybe there's something closer to the city over there.

I'm in the middle of a house hunt myself, so far all the places that I saw for around 2.5-2.8 are rather shabby. Maybe it's my luck though

Thanks MblSH. I think I am looking at the west side, 2-3 stops down the MRT. Somewhere in that heartland, is a HDB flat, with my name on it.

If you're ok with HDB and not in a hurry, then you might find something closer to the city - one of my co-workers just got himself a 2B hdb near Bugis for 1.7K

The older 2 BR HDB's had halls about 8' wide and the bedrooms would hold just a double bed and wardrobe (nothing built in) and maybe a vanity/dresser. These flats are small. 1.7K is ridiculous and is about double what they were 8 months ago.

There is a spacious private apartment at Farrer Court. 3 bedrooms, decently furnish. Landlord asked for S$4k initially, no takers the last I heard, the rent has drop to S$3.2 today.

i guess one solution is to share flat ? You can cry and gripe until the cow comes moo-ing at you and yet nothing will change. The problem is most housing agents are out to make a quick buck or two (very few would actually go to the extend of ensuring the place is ideal for you).

As for owners, alot of them are seizing the opportunity to turn a profit while they still can. There is seriously a lack of humanism here and alot of things are valued by dollar and cents. Some owners are just blind rats following the trend without realizing the implication of their 'lack of consideration' for the units.

Oh well, life's like that. What more about Singapore where land is scarce.
