Paperwork needed for Renting

Can anyone please let me know what paperwork we will need to rent an apartment in SG.
ie. EP, passport etc etc and its the etc etc that I am wondering about.

paperwork (the contract) will be provided by the agent.

Sorry I meant what other paperwork will they need from us before renting. Here in the UK they will need references etc.

mine didnt need any reference as i dont have any (in singapore anyway)! the last time i rented was in halls of residence.

just photocopy your passport, EP, bank details. i think that should be enuf. your agent should tell you what they need.

i think cbavasi meant Cheques
lots of them , for deposit, new pub (gas, electricity) account , agent fees etc all the usual stuff

How do you get a cheque account immediately. Now the following question.
What amount do we have to transfer from the UK to open an account?

to open a saving account, you need S$500 minimum balance to keep it free from charges with DBS. the saving account doesnt give you a cheque book but you can do online bill payment for water, gas, broadband, telephone, etc.

I can answer this one as well as I did it a couple of weeks ago!

Most of the local banks will want a min of $1k to open an account and obviously, proof of local ID therefore EP and proof of address. Now how you provide proof of address if you've just arrived and staying a hotel I don't know

(Luckily I already have a local address)

However, Citibank will allow you to open an account with no min initial deposit and no charges as long as you deposit your first salary cheque within 3 months. The cheque book arrived within 3 days as well.

POSB min is $500, DBS is $1k (Yeah I know they are the same company)

Also POSB give you a debit card on the spot rather than wait 2 weeks to come through the post!

If I wanted to open an account after getting my EP, could I use a US Bank's cashier check (USD funds)? Or do banks require a Singapore Dollar based check to open an account?

i think you are better off with a singapore dollar bankers draft.
