Maternity Cover in Health Insurance

My husband's work insurance does not cover maternity and we want to have a second baby in singapore. (we paid ourselves for the first one but I am worried about what would happen if there were complications for the pregnancy, birth or baby, second time round).

I have been trying to find information online re an insurance advisor or a company that offers health insurance that cover maternity AND newborns.

AXA does not cover newborns and this seems an important thing to me. A few weeks for a new baby in ICU would bankrupt us!

Does anyone know of a company or companies that offer health insurance with these benefits? Or an adviser who can help?

As far as I know, Bupa covers maternity and pregnancy complications ( after a waiting period of 10 months, which means you can only claim after being a member for 10 months ) as well as the baby from birth. Think the baby will need to get onto its own cover from 3 months.

Hi, currently I know of 2 insurers who DO COVER for pregnancy and newborn complications. The only catch is that you cannot be pregnant at the time when you sign up for the policy. I will be able to help you out with this if you wish. PM me for my no.

Personally in 2006 when my wife gave birth at Mt Alvernia, we had elected for a epidural natural birth but the baby showed signs of distress and the doctor told me she would perform a ceaser with epidural but by then my wife did not react to the epidural and she went on general anasthesia. Final bill went from a simple $3000 package to $11,200!!! I was insured with N*** I****** then and tried to make a claim ... no such luck as they dun cover for pregnancy related complications.

On a side note, my relative had an emergency Caesar too and the baby was born a month earlier due to complications arising from preenclampsia. Final bill at KK was a whopping $47000 thanks to a 30 day stay at NICU (Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit) for all pre mature babies born too early to properly sustain themselves. Thanks God mother and child are all doing well now.

As I know AXA covers newborns from day 1 if one of the parents adds the newborn to his own policy 3 months from their date of birth. You dont need to fill the medical history (except for adopted children and children conceived through assisted conception).

I am insured with AXA in the UK and as far as I know newborns are covered depends on the plan you get. We pay about 70 pounds monthly, ended up getting this plan as an extra as our last pregnancy ended up not being covered by our local Singapore medical plan. I hope this helps, there are brokers you can easily find through the internet, most based overseas and they often offer several options for people in this sort of situation.

Thank you Kimora. I have already spoken with AXA in the UK, however I am still not sure about adding newborns to the plan of one of the parents. Does anybody know how much time they actually need to process the application (for example if you notify them about adding a newborn on day 1)?

I have the same questions as you (just arrived, considering having second child but maternity is not covered by our insurance). I'd be really interested to know whether you managed to get pregnancy and delivery insurance through AXA in the UK or if you found any other provider.

I am also looking for insurance that will cover my newbor child. Most plans in Singapore do not provide coverage at birth. Does anyone have any plans they can recommend?

We were in the same boat a few months ago. After researching quite a bit we went with BUPA for my wife. I am covered by the company so did not need one. It is a bit expensive than local plans but covers pregnancy and new born child as well.

i bought the pru first plan under prudential, it covers maternity to new born.
