Best place to maintain a roadbike?

Hi!

I got myself a used road bike and want to get back into cycling. Unfortunately is the bike not in an as good state as it was advertised - it definitely needs a service.

I have a track record to make everything I touch worse and on top of that would have to buy myself the tools first, so I think I'll go for a bike shop this time...

Any recommendations/good experiences?

Nobody? So either nobody likes cycling here or there is no place to recommend...

I do cycle, but, would you be happy to cross the island for a repair ??

On second thought, if your bike is so terrible, ever considered to buy a new one, unless you current one is a good-looking, babe-attracting performance bike ???

Currently I live in the Newton area and didn't find a local shop around.

I'll not buy a new bike just because the de-railer settings are messed up... it just needs a bit of a service. On a side-note: I don't think SPGs like road bikes but if they did would my Cannondale frame fit the bill

While I don't want to argue what attracts an SPG and what doesnt' .. let me ask my friend, who works in Orchard, and cycles daily from Balestiar ..

on second thought - Newton - Balestier - not far right ???

If you go to the high end shops, you'll pay an arm and a leg. If you go to the local shops you'll get a much better deal.

I've become great friends with my local shop operator, have semi-regular drinking sessions with him, and get incredible service (in Clementi). A few bottles of duty free whiskey over the years (going on 15 now) has helped immensely. We often don't know what each other is saying but understand each other quite well.

So go find your shop and if you don't like it, keep trying. Singapore is no different from any other country. Its about developing relationships with your suppliers, it isn't rocket science.

I'll give an intro to my guy, but surely it isn't convenient to have a shop further than pushing distance from your place as that is where you'll need the work done.

Well, that was kind of the point why I posted here:
- I expect the big shops I can easily find to be massively overpriced. They are everywhere so probably in Singapore as well.
- I didn't find any shop really near to me.
- I was looking for a shop someone can recommend as I read some good and some fairly ugly reviews online...

P.S: I am moving to the BCD soon, I guess not too many bicycle shops there either

Kinda like my NZ friend (the one who car I'm currently using). He's been here on & off for 15 years (PR now) and still calls what I live in an HBD Flat!

Well, if in BCD/CBD, then the OP will be spoilt for choices .. Chinatown is just a walk away, with the multitide of bike repair shops in Smith Street and the surrounding .. *or was .. a few years ago .. when I used to support customers in Smith street area ..

A sunday walk around Chinatown / Mosque Street/Smith Street and all would not hurt ...

CBD it is... was preparing my dive trip this weekend, so the BCD goes into the suitcase and CBD is where I'll live. Thanks for the tip with Chinatown.

Hi Chris

I've just moved here and am still waiting for most of my stuff (including 2 bikes) to arrive. However if it`s just the derailleur that needs to be adjusted I will be more than happy to have a look if you bring along a screwdriver. (Dhoby Ghaut area)
