Living in Geylang

I am currently paying $5K for a CBD one bedder (700 sq ft). If I move to Geylang, I can get a smaller one (450 sq ft) for $2.8K. For under 3K, what are the other areas/ properties I should look at? I prefer to be within 5-6 MRT stops from Raffles Place, and my apartment should be within 5-10 minutes walk from an MRT. I don't mind a smaller sized apartment (400 sq ft and above is fine)

Then Lorong 2 would not be a consideration it is 7 MRT stops to Raffles Place. Might still be worth you checking it out I think Toa Payoh is a nice location and if I am paying just under 3k for a three bedroom two bathroom place you should be able to save quite a bit for a smaller apartment. Like I said it is HDB though not condo. There are condo's around Toa Payoh MRT but I ahve never looked at the cost.

1. I think Lorong just means "Lane". So you should refer to your address as "Lorong 2 Toa Payah". This will reduce confusion ...

if I am paying just under 3k for a three bedroom two bathroom place you should be able to save quite a bit for a smaller apartment.

This type of logic apparently doesn't work in SG .. not when I looked.

There are condo's around Toa Payoh MRT but I ahve never looked at the cost.

When I looked, Oleander started at 3500+. Not terrible if condo amenities are important to you. But those might be horrendously decorated units facing the garbage bin.

edit: Cheapest two per this site's rental ads are 3800/month. Didn't check other sites.

i stayed for 2 years in Geylang, altough it was upper lorong 25, it was as safe as the rest of singapore.
but anything below lorong 25 might be annoying, i remeber staying in a hotel in lor 18 when i just landed in Sg and there were dozens of girls in the street. if you are single, they will ask you every time, and if you have a local girlfriend, she won't want to come to your place

So jgarnett...if not a condo, were you able to rent a landed house? Mind sharing how much more than $3000?

Ok clearly i can't post links. The house i found was a conservation house with three beds.fully furnished.it was Nice.

Are you talking about the place on Lorong 41 Geylang? I lived there for two months in Service Apartment. It's great location. I didn't see anything much. Only thing I noticed is that the corner coffeeshop has different crowd in the morning vs. late nite (near midnight)

I've lived in red light district in Amsterdam for over 1 1/2 yrs and also used lived in Thailand (BKK) for 3+ years. Compared to that, upper Geylang area is rather tame. It looks like all the "action" is around Geylang/Aljuneid intersection and below (don't know 1st hand) .. upper Geyland near Paya Lebar MRT is relatively quiet.

Can you PM me your information on what you found? I'm interested. When I came here in January, I looked at lot of conservation shophouses. They were mostly 3.5K and up and not very nice. The best one was my service apartment on Lor 41 Geylang which was also conservation shophouse. They also had long term rentals but the price was a bit higher than I was willing to pay.

My company put me in the Serviced Apartment there for ten days when I arrived in Singapore. Yeah, I know about coffee shop--working girls just there for some eats and coffee. True about that area, you won't see much if at all. Although, one striking thing was the lighting fixtures stores. They're so bright. Literally.

Avoid the bars on Geylang Rd in the upper 40s if that thing bothers you. (And if it doesn't, don't waste your time in those ones ) The only time you really see it outside en-masse is around L24, and some of the lower ones. L24 I see a lot, as there are a lot of good places to eat right next to it. I made the mistake of parking there one time. At 6pm, it was fine. By just before 9pm, it was a zoo. There were girls sitting on my car (And not cute, or I wouldn't have cared!)

I don't recall exactly where L25 is (the even and odds don't line up perfectly) but I'm pretty sure it's a bad spot. I know L24 is as packed as an MRT station with ladies (of both sexes). I've tried driving down it on a Sunday afternoon and it was ridiculous. I think if you want "safe" Geylang, look in the Lorongs in the 30s and higher, especially 40+. The ones closest to Paya Lebar MRT. They'll be quieter, and you'll be closer to two MRT lines and some shopping.

Geylang lor 25 is opposite Aljunied MRT station facing Sims Ave.


Ladies street are at the area has the most hotel81, Fragrance Hotel, etc.

I too wanted to live in Geyland - it's a bargain. My wife; and my bank - would not agree. You cannot get (or at least a few years back) mortgages for the odd numbered lorongs in Geylang.

I thought is the even number having loan issue?
