free WLAN internet access in singapore?

i just moved to singapore from this week ... i was quite surprised my landlord told me there is free internet in the flat ... just log into any unprotected
WLAN and start surfing

staying in holland village, there are about 50 WLANs available in my condo ...
i guess about 20% are open for anybody to use ....

anybody want to share some inisght if logging into unprotected WLAN is illegal in Singapore?

it's not illegal to use those WLAN that u'd mentioned. but it's dangerous to share this kinda network. u never knw who's connected together with ya. if u r just using the PC for useless internet surfing, i think will be ok. but if u have any other impt things in it and use it for, think twice about just saving this little bit of money.

I was about to install a Wireless router, is it the same? I am not IT person. Will it have the same problem as WLAN? How do I protect myself?

Either use a mac filtering or use WEP and WPA security that comes with the access point. I suggest use both mac filtering and wep/wpa. read the instruction manual included...its not really hard to configure it.

man charged with 3rd degree felony for illegal use of another person's wireless network. just saw it on CNN website under technology. wonder if there's such law here in singapore. but better not try anything funny. hehe

WLAN: It is illegal to tap into unsecure wireless network. The question here is whether the owner of the WLAN is aware that his/her network is being used by others.
Wireless Router: Well, if you try to make it simple. It is a little like cordless phone. You have a few channels to work with.

I had thought nobody's gonna answer my question.

Are wireless router mainly for laptops/notebook?
How about PCs?
My home's using traditional (if I may call it that) router now. If I were to switched to wireless, what are the things I might need for my now 'wired' computers? New cards for the PCs?

hi,

Wireless Routers acts as a gateway between your computer/laptop and internet as per WiFi (802.11b) WLANs Protocol.

It has two or more then two interface.

1. external interface which connect to Backhaul connectivity- ISP from which you are getting wired connection via, ethernet -Cat 5, cable.

2. internal interface -this is wireless interface which talks to the wireless LAN card of your PC/LAPTOP within 300 Ft range.

3. It has one Network Name or SSID( Service Set identifier) which is picked up by your laptop automatically in most of the cases or you can manually search it thru your laptop. if there are multiple wireless routers in the area then your laptop will search all the Network Names and displays you the list from which you can choose one of them to connect to that wireless router.

3. This wireless router technology works on IP address mechanism.

Please let me know if this info is sufficient for you.

So now what I need is some wireless lan cards, wireless router and a change of subscription?

Hi,
You need a wifi enabled ( laptop with wireless adapter or wireless lancard) laptop , wireless router and authorization, authentication & accounting to access the internet thru wireless lan. This triple A will be provided by the wireless service provider of your area.
