Anyone caught Barbenheimer?

Barbie and Oppenheimer has been all over the news and social media. I haven't made it down to the movies yet, was wondering if anyone has caught either? My daughter is keen on Barbie and the mister, Oppenheimer.

Last weekend I was stateside and went to the cinema with my brother; we considered both of those movies, but after watching the trailers, decided on the Red Door… which was so-so. My SIL went to see Barbie and she said it was so-so; that is what I’d expect.

I’m happy to report that it is still possible to see a movie on the cheap, it cost us just $4 per person. I also got my usual beef and cheese burrito at the Taco Bell drive-thru for $2 with a free iced water. I also found some great deals at TJ Maxx, picked up several shirts in the $10-15 range. Although inflation has hit a lot of prices there, it’s heartening to know that good deals still exist, if you look carefully.

I think my son would like it, but it seems to be rated R/M-18.

Do you mean the insidious movie? I really enjoyed the third movie, thought it was very well thought out.

Just saw Barbie today. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was certainly a surprise. The ending felt a little rushed and out of nowhere, but I'd say overall it was a nice, feel good movie.

Tickets were $12 each though, and that's not counting any popcorn or nachos, which were around $7.50 and $9.50 respectively. Crazy.

I'd think a historical film is important for all to see, don't understand the rating. It's not like kids don't know about the birds and the bees, look at all of them getting pregnant at 16.

This is the first movie I've ever heard of that "has" to be watched on a special screen. Not sure what difference IMAX makes.

$12 is cheap for Singapore, I usually pay closer to $15 on the weekend. The typical cinema in the US charges similar prices… but the difference is competition. Most towns in the US have budget cinemas that are more basic, but are decent enough (for me anyway) and charge less than half of the big boys.

The only way to enjoy lower prices here is to cross the border, and Malaysia happens to have some of the lowest ticket prices in SE Asia, close to US$4 ≈ RM19. I wouldn’t recommend crossing the border just for that alone, but it’s one option if you happen to be there for other reasons and have the time.

We always used to catch a movie in JB. To avoid the jam we'd enter early and leave late, and a movie was the perfect way to kill a couple hours. Have had largely positive experiences, except once when I sat down and noticed my seat was wet. Turned on my flashlight, and realized I was sitting in a pool of vomit. Absolutely disgusting.

I’m reminded of the verse in Corinthians… everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial. Just because they know about the birds and the bees doesn’t mean it’s good for them. I am fortunate that my 15 year old son has the natural sense to avoid explicit sexual content, without my guidance.

I’m sure the historical content is important for all to see, but the filmmakers decided include explicit sexual content as well, which resulted in a M18 rating here and an R rating in the US. I would have preferred that Singapore censors just cut it and lower the rating for more to see. They used to do that in the past.

Speaking of Singapore censors, I once caught a show on channel 5 that had some questionable content that seemed to glorify drug use and I wrote in to the censorship board about this (probably the only ang moh ever to have done so) but interestingly they said the show was aired after 10pm which is when they relax their standards (kids are presumed to have gone to bed). I would have never known they had this timing cutoff, had I not wrote in.

I think that would be tough as it's presumed to add context to the show, the whole point of a historical film is to communicate the full picture.
