In reality, Trump could very well be reelected. My entire family back in the US will almost certainly vote for him, and they are not the MAGA crowd or Trumpers… it’s not about that whatsoever.

Obviously, they are the "MAGA crowd" and "trumpers"... that's the only way that anyone could even think of voting for this treasonous rapist, this ignorant, demented criminal. There is no policy to support, foreign or otherwise. There is no healthcare policy. There are only threats of retribution.

Your family are most assuredly MAGA trumpers if they would consider voting for this man.
This is exactly the kind of misperception discussed in the link I provided earlier.

My parents are from the silent generation, they are devoutly religious, live a pious life, but have unshakable views that are diametrically opposed to much of what the Democratic Party stands for. They are not fans of Trump, he is the just the bath water that can’t be thrown out without the baby.

I asked my daughter who is now 18 who she intends to vote for, and she said she doesn’t want to vote. I can’t say I blame her. The last two presidential elections had no candidates worth voting for. Trump vs. Hillary? No thanks. Trump vs. Biden? No thanks. The next one doesn’t look promising.

I think Chris Wallace said it best in this video “it’s hard to believe you are the hopes of the village”

The problem with this perspective is exactly the same problem as when a person declares, "I am not a racist," and then immediately turns around and votes for a racist. You're "devoutly religious" but support a rapist and misogynist. How do you live a "pious life" yet support a thief and traitor? This is truly a case of behaviors not aligned with beliefs.

And what is it about the Democratic party that they are diametrically opposed to? Is it universal health care? A decent minimum wage? Strong environmental laws that address climate change? Prosecuting the criminal trump? Proper border and immigration policy? It sounds a lot more like your family has absorbed a caricature of the Democratic party that they've picked up from Fox, OAN, and other right wing spewers of lies, rather than any rational approach to the issues.

Again, this perspective is patently false. There was, and is a big difference between the candidates. trump is a treasonous criminal. Clinton was nothing of the sort. Same for Biden... a vast difference between him and trump. You appear to prefer wearing blinders to the reality of the situation to avoid having to recognize that your argument is false.

Your daughter needs to grow up and realize that there is no perfect candidate, there never has been. One selects the candidate most closely aligned with one's own views. Not voting is exactly the same as giving a vote to the opposition. The choices are excruciatingly clear when it comes to trump vs Biden. Your posture is insane.

No, my parents don’t watch Fox news, much less OAN (ha, they would have to ask… what’s that?). They live out in the sticks, no cable, DSL internet and only free to air TV. They live a simple, almost austere life. They make old school seem new school… but both of my parents are well educated. My dad worked as a technician at what is now Verizon for 35 years and my mom was a nurse.

As a matter of perspective, they see the Dems wanting to expand the size and scope of the government (bloat) and raise taxes to pay for it. My parents still have a pioneer spirit and believe everyone should stand on their own two feet — be responsible for yourself, don’t rely on the government for any handouts. My parents are pro-life, and don’t appreciate the Dems attacks on religious freedom nor the legalization of gay marriage, marijuana, illegal aliens… the list goes on. It’s all common sense, but as my dad often says, common sense isn’t too common these days. As far as candidates go, their view is that all politicians are basically rotten/crooked, so the character isn’t going to sway them as much as the policies supported by the candidate/party.

I was just imagining trying to convince my dad to vote for Biden. My dad is such a kind soul, but in this situation his head would go backwards, his eyebrows would go up, and his expression would be like “you have got to be kidding” — it would honestly be hilarious.

One advantage being Christian, whoever gets elected, it can be accepted as God’s will. That can be a source of great comfort no matter which side of the aisle you are on.

Sadly, it’s either Biden or Trump in 2024.

We need a third party candidate.
Why do you say this? Biden has provided a steady guiding hand throughout tumultuous times. He has done this in spite of concerted efforts on the part of republicans to thwart his every move. He's passed an infrastructure rebuilding program. He's dealt with Ukraine and the Russian invasion in a steadfast and non alarmist way, and one that has not brought US troops into the war. The economy has held up without entering the predicted recession under his watch. And while I am very critical of the manner in which Israel has destroyed Gaza, this single issue alone is not enough to disqualify Biden from re-election.

So... what's wrong with Biden?

Image

Trump, OTOH, is a proven f*cking criminal, a traitor, a seditious bastard who orchestrated the Jan 6 insurrection and continues his lies of a stolen election. He's a proven liar, a proven thief, corrupt through and through. He's incapable of leading; he wants to be dictator, he's already said that a president is immune from all prosecution, and his election will be a serious threat to our democracy.

How can he even be compared in the same sentence?

One thing I've appreciated about Biden is that he seems to have a competent administration behind him. Considering the president is not a king and more of a head of a government this makes sense to me. Much more than idiots repukes screaming they want a king.

I asked my brother just today if he was voting for Trump this time around and said no, for many of the negative reasons stated upthread.

But then I asked about Biden, and he said he will NEVER vote Democrat.

I really don't understand the hatred for democrats (and remember they do win the popular vote routinely so why hate them? Hating them means you hate the majority of your countries voters!). I wish democrats would just go quiet on abortion (like just ignore the entire issues - it's an individual issue, not a country issue).

There are a lot of aspects the Dems don’t do themselves any favors on. Sanctuary cities, defund the police, indoctrination and grooming in schools, late stage abortions, race and cultural wars, white guilt and critical race theory, pronouns, gender x, the whole oversensitive, getting offended, being politically correct stuff and worst of all, labeling everyone as racist, phobic, etc. if you don’t agree with their narratives. At the same time, they are very insensitive and intolerant of anyone who doesn’t share their views, to the point that religious beliefs are not respected, nothing is sacred except their own world view — and there’s a contempt for those who don’t share it.

I read an interesting article on how conservatives feel anger but liberals feel contempt - and contempt is far more difficult to fix than anger, because underlying contempt is a lack of respect for the other person. It’s the same in a marriage, contempt is usually the final death knell. It’s also starting much younger, even in middle school at SAS my son was telling me about the divide between conservatives and liberals in school, and the mob mentality of liberal side… during my time, even in high school this didn’t exist. We were blissfully unaware, and I think that was a good thing.

Here is the article in case anyone is interested:

All dog whistle lies parroted by the MAGA right. Everyone of the items on your list can be shown to be complete bullshit.

Liberals I know don't have a lack of respect for an individual, they have a lack of respect for bone headed, stupid, and dangerous ideas and lies... like grooming or defunding the police or CRT... or even being "woke"... these are not inventions of liberals... they belong to MAGA extremists. And when it comes to supporting trump... truly, no respect is warranted, for you support a man that would destroy democracy in this country for his own ends.

And here you are, parroting the same lies again.

I pop in here now after having left Singapore years ago after 25 years there. I live comfortably as a retiree in Washington state. I did some part time teaching in the schools here to keep active even as I approached 70. Now at 77, I am completely retired.

I never saw what malcontent refers to in the schools (grooming, indoctrination, race and culture wars, crt, etc. ). Al this is bs, as Strong Eagle states. Joe Biden is old, but with that comes a wisdom to lead steadily.

I have no idea why some people have these views toward progressives. I have made lot of money this last year in the stock market. Inflation is way down. The job market is doing great. The proposed border deal by a bipartisan group of Senators is the best in my generation of living, and yet the MAGA group is taking the lead from Trump to not support it because it would be a good election issue.

I am disappointed in the lack of information people have. It's sad.

I sincerely hope you don’t get as worked up about politics as you appear to be from your posts. Both sides are guilty of lies, that’s nothing new. But lies or not, nothing you or I write in this forum is going to make a difference.

What I can tell you for certain is that my son at SAS has been getting a good dose of this stuff. The climax was the mandatory “life skills” class that teaches kids that they can identify as ______ , regardless of what they were born as. They also required him learn pronouns like xim and xer. I am not making this stuff up. I actually have access to the materials from his class and they have said pronouns listed.

Once again you use an unfounded and patently false equivalence as though the actions of the Democrats and the republicans are the same. Far from it, and if you'd open your eyes to even one example (election deniers, as a start), you'd realize this. Instead, you sit in your isolated and malinformed cocoon pretending everybody is the same. Fact: There is a vast difference between the parties.

Hell, I used to be a republican. I even got to shake President Reagan's hand for the work I did on his campaign. They were mostly normal people with different ideas of how things should be run. But that day is long gone... it racists, misogynists, and evangelical Christians who want to stuff their version of religion down your throat. It's full of people who want to turn back the clock to the "good ole days" when all them uppity women and minorities knew their place. It's full of liars interested only in power. The republican party is filled with some truly dumb f*cking people (Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lorena Bobert, Matt Gaetz, Jim Jordan, Chip Roy, and of course, the orange pendejo himself, to name just a few).

Damn right I'm passionate about things. It's ignorant complacency like yours that is putting this country in real danger.

Maybe you ought to go have a chat with SAS, because that is NOT the norm in the USA. I don't know what kind of rags you are reading (and please tell me that you are giving Fox News a miss) but that's simply not happening. Besides being well read, I volunteer in public schools. I have met many teachers, counsellors, and administrators, I know that your charges are exactly what I called them: bullshit.
