My understanding between checked baggage vs cargo for pets:

Checked bagged is when owner flies with pet on the same flight. The pet’s carrier is tied to the owner’s name and I read if the pet’s carrier goes missing, it might be harder to track?

Cargo is tied to the pet’s name and has tracking. And if done right, they can transit in an animal hotel at the airport. I used cargo since I wasn’t flying with my pet.

If you fly US to SG, Lufthansa is usually used as the pet can transit in the animal hotel either in Frankfurt or Amsterdam for a few hours before carrying on to SG.

Just a note for anyone looking to ship their pets overseas using Singapore airlines cargo, they have stopped the service since November 2022. Want to save anybody's time because reaching their customer service team is impossible.

Are pets still allowed to travel via checked baggage (vs. cargo)? I think the difference is usually based on size/weight, so maybe you were only inquiring on cargo.

Yes, I believe they still do checked baggage. We're still in the process of inquiring, the problem is that with each email we send we are served by a different customer service rep who offers us a different answer.

We want to use SQ as we have a lot of miles with them.

There’s always the option to send the pet first on another airline as cargo, get a trusted family member to take care of the pet while you fly over on your preferred airline.

A research fellow I knew sent her cat back to the US first while she was finishing up her employment contract here. Cat was looked after by family members there. Then she and her husband went on a belated honeymoon that was delayed due to covid. Happily reunited with kitty in the end.

Nice in theory, but logistically challenging. We do have relatives all over the country, but taking care of a dog is a lot to ask, especially when the timeframe is unclear. More importantly, someone would need to drop him off and pick him up at precise timings which is difficult to arrange. Ideally, we'd be able to take him on the plane with us, but not sure if that's possible at this point.

Yes, this is likely what we're going to have to end up doing. Just not ideal because it's $7-10K and coming at a time when we've been saddled with medical bills and an EXPENSIVE college tuition.

I plan to move to Singapore from Indonesia on student Visa of Master degree at NAFA in August and bringing my two senior dogs.
Is home quarantine possible because Indonesia in class 3 (not rabies free) ?
has anyone here had an experience with home quarantine ?
I am writing to AVS and have contacted agents in Singapore.
They are emotional animal support for me ( I can provide the necessary documents) and they are very old with multiple health issues that require meticuluos care so I am hoping to do the 30 days quarantine at our own residency in Singapore.

We tried to get our pet an exception because they had genuine anxiety issues documented by the veterinarian, and they would not budge. I would not expect any exceptions, but no harm trying.
