Shipping things/relocating from NYC to SG

Hi,

Is there anyone who has experience shipping stuff/relocating from New York City to Singapore? Any recommendation for good/reliable international moving company that charge reasonable price? Any do's and dont's advice? Would appreciate if you could share/provide some info.

Wow! A big move for both of you. Is your company moving you? Or are you arranging and paying for everything on your own?

A lot depends your housing budget/allowance (If you can afford a place with that is partially furnished, you may get by with shipping less furniture)

Are you alone or moving with your family (if you have kids, bring all of their stuff)

Can you afford storage in the US?


Here's a preliminary list of don'ts:

all your winter clothes (but do bring some basics for sure)

electronics (plugs and voltage different here, you'll have to use a
transformer. Specifically a DVD Player (get a multi-regional one here)

food (moving companies say this is a big no-no. You can put some favorite items in your suitcase)

wine (expensive here but if they find it in your shipment you'll have to pay the duty

antiques made of paper (books, maps)

What I would bring (or do bring back every home leave from the US):

I'd go out and buy 10 new pairs of shoes to bring
I'd buy lots of new DVDs (TV here, is improving, but still lacking. However, price of DVDs is coming down)
12 books I wanted to read
Over the counter medicines the kids and I like
Jeans & shorts


Common misconceptions:

wood furniture will be fine here
you won't get caned for bringing in gum
you can bring DVDs but if they find them (very rare) they will charge you a nominal viewing fee and return them to you
Photographs will be fine in albums if you plan to use airconditioning

I have used Crown, Allied, KC Dat (local mover) and Santa Fe. I never had a problem with any of them. Allied did our more recent move in January '05. All worked out quite well.

Mary - Thanks for the helpful tips. Do you think it is safe to ship photos/albums and books via sea? Is there any extra expenses we have to pay (any hidden cost) other than what was quoted in the shipping cost?

ahk - I basically contacted those companies that advertised in Sporeexpats web site like unicorn and crossroads. Now that I have more info about other moving cos from Mary and honeygirl, I'll try to get quotes from them.
