What Is Your Singapore Cinema Movie Experience?

really, we should rate the comfort levels of these places

saw Pirates 3 at the Shaw last week, and despite two layers of long-sleeved clothing we literally froze our butts off

this was not your usual freezing cold Singapore movie experience, it was worse

it almost made the trademark Singapore shake-your-head-in-amazement-at-the-moronic-bellows-of-laughter-at-mundane-not funny-things-thing pale in comparison

so I'll think twice before going back there, though must admit that GWC and the new Cathay seem to be improving on this unfortunate trend

anyone else have this experience?

My limited experience of cinemas here from GV at Tampines mall. Everything was basically fine, (minor annoyance local teenagers but hey they are noisy everywhere), but getting my favourite seat was like impossible mission.

Me: 2 tickets 1st row in the middle.

Ticket sales: Sir on 6th row have also.

Me: Sure but I want to be on 1st row, the front row please.

TS: Yes, but also have on 5th and 6th row.

My wife: Yes he actually prefers to have a seat on 1st row.

TS: ???What??? well but why 1st? 6th better.

Me (getting slightly annoyed): well that’s your opinion. I prefer 1st row.

OK, I left, and let my wife to finish the transaction. She managed to negotiate 1st row tickets to us.

Aircon was actually fine there.

Upto now I have been in 3 cinemas. Cathay Orchard, Cathay Dhoby Ghaut and Golden Village VivoCity.

I felt frustrated in GV as you can't actually choose your seat or in other words you are left to the mercy of the guy working there. Aircon is more or less the same everywhere so no comment on that. seats were comfortable, but popcorn was cold

Cathay Cineplexes are still my favorite, but I try new places just to compare more. More or less every week I go once to cinema so I have many chances to try. I guess I will try the one in Bugis next time.

In general, I enjoy the cinemas here. Comfortable seats and good sound system. However, I see that local people (as far as I have seen) don't follow rules of courtesy in cinema. Almost every time arrives someone after the movie starts. Some of them chat or let their children talk all along the movie without warning. Eating and drinking noisily can be acceptable but speaking with mobile during the movie is very rude.

I am sure some of you also come across this type of experience.

My favorite thing about watching movies in Singapore is the assigned seating, just like most things in Singapore with a little advanced planning you can take advantage of the infrastructure.

I haven't been to another country/Place that is so organized.

WE have been to Vivo City theater. Popcorn cold and small asian portion are available to buy. Seats are comfortable maybe they lean back too far.

If you are in the right theater you can here the movie next door.

People ar Vivo have always been quite.


Been to another I think somewhere west. Was not nice. Customer service sucked and the more expensive seats for couples is definately not worth the extra $$.

By far the Shaw is the best and if there is better then I gotta go to it.

Shaw complex has big popcorn and big drinks.

Saw Spider Man there and there was alot of talking and people getting up and down. The talking didnt bother me that much for that movie because it helped me stay awake durring all the long long scenes where Peter Parker pulled his suit out from under the bed and stared at it for 5 minutes while he had 6 minutes to save the city from Venom.

Saw Pirates last weekend and Road Hogs a couple momths ago and very much enjoyed the flick.

By far I recommend Shaw. If you want good seats wait untill the movie has been here for 2 weeks or 1 week durring school break.

Buy your tickets online 12 to 24 hours prior.

As far as the locals finding things funny in a movie and you have know idea why.

When we went to see Road Hogs 80% of the theater thoughts the wierdest things were funny. My wife and I looked at each other alot durring that movie trying to understand what was so funny. The rest of the movie we spent looking at each other trying to figure out why no body was laughing at the funny stuff.

Plaza Singapura : to see 'Priceless' - the screen was tiny but other than that no complaints however I don't think I'd go back if I had a choice. Overall I would give 3/5 (for the cinema not the film!).

GV Tampines : to see 'Shrek 3' with my son. Much bigger screen (Screen 8). Warm popcorn. Choice of seating. As with eveywhere there was a long queue for tickets but they had a priority queue for Platinum Visa holders so you might want to look out for similar perks. Rating : 4/5

I find the screen sizes quite variable here, so one thing I've noticed is that if you book online then you can usually choose your own seat. I reasoned that the more seats there are in a theatre the bigger the screen is, so I tend to go for the cinemas with lots of seats now!

In Cathay Orchard and probably in the other Cathays, you can choose your seats.

Pirates of Caribbean was too long and boring. Nice digital effects, but I am not impressed. Shrek 3 was fun. I liked it a lot. Ocean's 13 should be good as the casting improves with Al Pacino this time. Fantastic 4 and Harry Potter coming up. too. Plenty of movies this month

I know what you mean Kats. At least the films are shown quite early here sometimes even earlier than the States, someone told me.

I will definitely see Oceans 13, as far as sequels go, I thought Oceans 12 was quite good, and if this one has Al Pacino in it, then I'm hoping it will be entertaining.

I really liked Priceless. It slightly on the 'chickflick' side but I think because it's French it can get away with it! Audrey Tautou is great as usual. I just found it to be a lighthearted easy-to-watch film.

I thought to give an update on my OP-

Shaw actually has a feedback form on their homepage, so I submitted my experiences.

They responded within a few days and said they'd talk to the staff to be more conscientious.

So once in a while there are good surprises here.
