Local Indians and India Indians

Hii all ,, I need an opinion frmo you people..

do you all find it hard to mix with the local indians here or do you just prefer to mix with your own country men ?

Do you find local Indians here arrogant and there is just something that you dont like about them ?

Reason why I ask is that ,, from my observation from attending parties, events or some other stuff,,i notice that the local indians are always on side ..and the Indian nationalities will be mixing with their own people...

I spend extended periods in SG. I don't find the SG Indians arrogant. Just different which is quite natural.

One reason for the divide as you mention is the background. A majority of local Indians are Tamil, while the new arrivals are a mixed bunch and more cosmopolitan. Social encounters are cordial but after a while both groups retreat to their own comfort zones. Again its very natural as there is only so much to discuss between the respective communities.

It would really be of concern if there is any animosity. Thankfully that is not the case. Lets hope as more professional Indians come over from desh it leads to greater interaction.

On the contrary, am sorry to say that the Indian Indians, not all but many of them tend to turn snobbish after coming here.

Having been born and brought up in the UK, I find it hard mixing with Indians from India and local Indians. I have tried, but I come across a barrier. It seems it all boils down to our upbringing and backgrounds. Also, I have found that Indians from India tend to only mix with Indians from India and are not really willing to integrate with other Indians(e.g. indians from the West).

after years of staying in Clementi , I have bumped into a really nice Bengali woman ..she's my buddy now..we both like to talk a lot... well.. now when I have shifted to my condo ..i was hoping to mix with some India Indians who are Expats here.. but the ladies dont have a smile on tht face ..

recently ..i went to my this friend's condo party ..i was the only one in western clothes...the rest in punjabi suits..i felt so out ..anyways ... the India indians all in 1 group....and me n my mum ..gosh look so out..i left the party after 1 hr... its like I tried to be friendly to the other woman...was hoping to get more frds.. but they seemed more happy in their own world...

well.. there's a lot you could to bridge the gap..

for instance.. just tell one of the guys in the local crowd.. how u are so intrigued by Singlish.. and they would include you in the group.. its easy to break ice with them.. they are as wary of us, as we are of them..

we have to acept the fact where ever we go around the world, there are local born citizen, singapore is a country whereby it do not owned by a particular race, chinese,malays,indians make up the main racial group in singapore. Tamil,Mandrin,Malay,English make up the official Indian languages of Singapore , so what is wrong in being arrogant, the local Indians are thinking that new Indians are messing up their 45 years of historical work in singapore, in India we expect all Indians to learn Hindi, wheras when Indian Indians esp the ones from Northern state come to Singapore, they are neglecting Tamil language and they choose malay or mandrin for their kids. Absoulte shame we are putting ourselves in, the japanese wont do that, the chinese will never sell himself to another language or race group, but Indians will, i came across Indian Indians having intrested having their kids learn Malay and yet can complain that the Malay kids are bullying them during Malay class and the Local Indian kids are unfriendly.
The mentality is what matters.
In Singapore the Indian Culture is very strong, but the are Indian Indians are behaving as though they are born in Britain and grew in America. The local Indians are preserving their Indian Culture wheras the Indian Indians when they stepped out of India, they think they are Englishmen.

So we Indian Indians should stip messing up the work done by the local Indians and we should respect their ruling official language .

you know i havent been here very long, just under two months. I have been trying to connect with Indians who moved here a while back and the local Indians as you would say. This is my observation. The exapt Indian are pretentious and behave like lord falklands. The local guys dont give a dam, and continue to live in thier micro world. basically there is a cultural difference that doesnt connect the two suposed Indian groups who are quite literally from different worlds. I say a comment about becoming english when Indian are abroad. Well atleast in Singapore we are more english. Liiving in India for the longest time, I spoke more in english than HIndi or at best Hinglish. However I think what intrigues the Indian who are coming here and trying to adapt is the lack of grammar. Singlish is a functional languge, minus the rules of greammar. I think the unlearning of english is what bothers the Gaijin Indian.

..agree its an issue...most indians who grew up in the west tend to live a westernised lifestyle.. .this does not mix well with locals or indian-indians...

two things divide the indian community:
local vs form india
north vs south

and in my (very limited) experience, the north-south thing is a bigger barrier than the local\non local thing.

anyway would love to meet more indians of all kinds!

I fully agree with our Bros, Nazirmercan,Indianlassie & Parag.
When we are out of indian we think we are europeans or american. The way we behave like one.Even to the extent of treating a indian indian as idiots. They tend to see another Indian as a rival for their Job here and even tough they smile at Indian Indian and speak nicely outside,Most of them have a Cunning thinking. They cannot accept another Indians on par or better than them. Local Indian are living on their own.Ofcourse they don`t mix with indian indians, But when we break the ice with them, They readily accept us and think us as part of their circles.We have to make the move first, cos we are the ones who came here after them, so what the issue in making the first move? Cos I am sharing from my experience, Cos I have many local Indian friends.

I think indians r not interactive as westerners. they look at strangers with a double doubt in their head. I say, u come to know abt ppl only when u talk wid them.

i feel that Indian Indians should also appreciate that a singaporean indian is also made from his surroundings. Different behavior doesn't mean being snobbish. Do you disagree Rajiv and others?
