I want to buy some silk kimonos as presents to send home. I thought that China Town would be the best place but not sure which shop to go to. I dont want to spend a fortune but neither do I want something that's rubbish. So if anyone has any suggestions I'd be really grateful.

Josmum - with the deluge of visitors staying with us here recently many of them have indeed bought the same down in Chinatown. I'll ask Ms. C when she gets back this evening and post the suggested shop names here for you.

Are you looking for a real Japanese kimono/yukata, a Chinese qi pao/cheongsam, or neither of the above?

Uhh...
This is a kimono. It doesn't look anything like what you expected, and you're obviously not going to buy one, because they're way too expensive and not really sold in Singapore anyway.
This is a cheongsam (qipao), aka "China dress". They're kinda slutty (that pic is actually pretty tame...) and totally anachronistic, but Westerners tend to think they're hot, so you can pick 'em up cheap in Chinatown's touristy bits.

I'm pretty sure josmom just wants some silk or 'silk' robes with embroidery on the back. Yes you can go to Chinatown, but you can get the same errand done at Lucky Plaza, Far East Plaza or Holland Village or a dozen other places.
Chinatown will have a better selection, but it can be a little overwhelming, especially if you don't know the difference between a cheongsam and a kimono.

That's true RNT...but Sierraetc is right, there is a shop with a really good range about halfway down on the righthand side heading towards MRT in Chinatown.

They have a pretty good range, but won't be the best price around town.

About the only ones I ever see wearing them are 55 year old karaoke mamas and Tiger Beer Hustlers.
