Buying Wine

on the few visits we have made to Singapore we have noticed how expensive wine is to be in the supermarkets. are there some supermarkets that are better then others ?? I haven't looked in a CarreFour yet.....

In HK they quite often have special discounts and then an additional 10% if you buy a case at Wellcome and Park and Shop. Does this happen in Singapore. ??

I friend suggested a few wine 'warehouses' in Dempsey road. Has anyone been here or can recommend anywhere else....

We are moving our wine fridge empty and it will look pretty sad if it stays that way..

We don't drink megga expensive wines but don't want really cheap headache inducing stuff either. ... any tips ???

if you go to specialty wine shops and get them by the case, there will be discounts, but it won't be pegged at 10%.

you could haggle. a friend got a whole bunch of wine for his wedding and i think he was given a substantial discount...!

Heya - CarreFour like Cold Storage have "specials" on wine. The place we buy ours is Wine+ - we prefer the Novena outlet. They have 1/2 and case prices, a good selection, and if you need, free home delivery.

Run by an Aussie guy.

Coldstorge has specials as well and NTUC online has good prices if you know your wines. Viognier was $19.00 a bottle......NZW one.

I hate to have an empty wine fridge.

Carrefour has average champagne on special and it was $50.00 a bottle.

Zeenit - have you checked out Wine+ as yet (as per the PM's). They have some dastardly good prices there at the moment for bubbles and viognier (love my V do I).

(And no, I do not have an interest in Wine+, mods - although with the amount of money Ms. C, myself, and our friends spend there - we should be offerred a shareholding!!!)

Or if you have a friend who frequently travels overseas, you can ask him/her to buy from the Duty Free Shop in Changi. But if it's trips to Malaysia, there's no duty free concession.

Come to think of it, I should have started this kind of business since I'm almost always traveling. he he he! Just joking!

I keep my trips for spirits as they just not even worth buying in Singapore due to prices. Wine is not something I just want to grap and run so its more painful. But we off to Perth in Oct and just maybe we will find a wineyard

Yeh I'm with Zeenit - we get the spirit, the bubbles, and the token wine. The wine isn't cheap at Changi. And the selection is pretty poor. (I know, Ms. C and I have hunted and hunted!! - Damn great airport otherwise - we love it!)

@Asian-Geekette - welcome back - trouble is the limits here are pretty restrictive anyway. I have a mate coming in tonight and told him to just load up to the limit and not worry too much about what he bought, as he'll see the standard ones.

@Zeenit - Margaret River - plenty of peeps here from PER will be able to suggest some. If not, let me know and I'll put you in contact with our people there.

Thanks! I came back to SG last week but I'm now out of SG again. I'm in KL.

Yup. If I buy from the duty free shop in Changi Airport, I get a liter of wine, a liter of my favorite Baileys and just 3 cans of Tiger beer. I usually just end up giving them away.

We ask for Pimms from the duty free as its easy to grap and not easy or cheap to get here.

Changi prices for wine are not particularly remarkable, they pretty much only sell stuff in the S$40+ bracket. (Hard liquor is dirt cheap though.) Unless you're into high-end wine, then aside from the occasional bottle of bubbly, you're better off rummaging the bargain bins at Carrefour, Giant, etc.

Bottles & Bottles (Tanglin) runs some pretty good specials - she also receives wines from smaller vineyards - reasonably priced and free delivery.

There are wines in the Changi DFS which are in the 30 SGD price bracket.

One just have to know where to look.

Yeah, I picked up a few bottles of $25 plonk in the Budget Terminal once -- but are they any different, in price or quality, to what you can get in Carrefour & co for $20?
