Teaching in International Schools

Hi all,

Just wondering if any1 can help me out with how to get a job teaching in an International School in Singapore? If there is better schools? Any agencies that would be good? What the pay and expat packages are like? What it's like to work and live in Singapore? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Can you answer my following questions? So I can give some information.

Where are you from?

Are native English speaker?

What’s your education?

Do you have teaching experience particularly in International Schooling system?

If yes what subjects and which are the level and curriculum system you have taught?

What are interest and activity you can deal in School?

Are Married? If yes how many children? Is your wife also teacher?

Now I’ll answer some of your question.

If there is better school?

There are number of best International School in Singapore. Most of the International Schools are focused with a particular community people and also very important of the curriculum what they are following.

Any agencies that would be good?

No not at all mostly school requirements never done with agencies. So be careful. All most very school in Singapore posts their vacancies their school website. Some schools always keep their vacancies open.

What the pay and expat packages are like?

It’s depending on which community based school, your teaching experience and subject. Even some International school pay starts from S$ 1500 only. May Be I would say if you have 3 to 5 years experience possible to get minimum of S$ 4000., but keep in mind it’s always depend on which school is that!!!!!

Expat packages- some school may provide free accommodation (there will be limit of rent) or shared accommodation that mean share with co worker( mostly in HDB). Possible to get house allowance. Free education for children or subsidy fee. Of course pay even in holidays. Travel allowance to home country once they renewal your contract.

What it's like to work and live in Singapore?

Very expensive but well organized country.

I don't mean to be a hard case here, and when you use language like, "If there is better schools?" I conclude your English language skills are insufficient to get you into any International School as a teacher.

I am a 28 year old, single, female Australian Primary Teacher with a Masters in Education. I have 6 years experience in both Australian and British schools, years 1-6. By better schools, I mean ones that expat teachers enjoy and prefer to work in.

I think you have lots possibilities to get teaching job in International School. Having master in education and 6 years of experience in schooling, Single and female (In primary section schools prefer female) should add chance. I guess you are Australian? So language won’t be big problem. In that case first you try with all Australian base school in Singapore, I know there is new one called “One world International School”

The private sector for teaching English to foreigners in Schools like "I CAN READ" pay more i would believe, I was informed by a teacher that 4500$ was the norm for a 20 hr week, the other days are prep, marking and admin I guess. Quite a few of the teachers are Australian and British.
