VOIP Solution for My Problem?

I'm traveling a lot between KL & SG. I'd like to use a KL SIM when in KL.

However, if my SG mobile number was called when SIM not in phone, I'd like to call forward to VOIP phone number which in turn would forward to my KL phone number.

And of course, if using my SG number, would like to forward my KL number to a VOIP number that would in turn forward to my SG number.

Anything like this possible?

I don't know too much about VoIP, but the first idea that comes into my mind is a dual phone, with 2 sim cards, and when you are in MY you forward your calls to the SG card to the VoIP.

So the cards are always both activated if you want, and with the forwarding that you request. Both can be configured independently.

it would be possible BUT when in KL (or anywhere when roaming), you must not turn on your SG sim! and vice versa.

reason : when you in KL and you turn on your SG sim, the sim will register with the local telco and therefore know you are roaming. so when you divert the call to another number, it would be like double cost - SG to KL and divert to VoIP to KL sim. if you dont turn it on when in SG, it would be SG divert to VoIP to KL sim.

that's why some telco will charge you for people leaving you voicemail when roaming even if you dont listen to it.


p/s i am guessing you have a VoIP number. if there's no VoIP number, then you wont be able use the mobile to divert the call. call divertion is based on the telco function, not the mobile.

I am not sure if I understand the problem - you already have a VOIP gateway and the basic mobile call forward function does not work or you looking for (a) VOIP gateway(s)?

If you were in the US or the UK this wouldn't be a problem - there are a number of service providers who offer this service (although I think the changing of the destination number is slightly more manual - like through the internet)

Singtel has the "travel sim" function - which somewhat meets your needs (but not really).

Doesn't Skype do this? Or not in Singapore? I know that you can call- forward skype calls to a "normal" phone, but I don't know if a normal phone can make a call to a skype account.

I don't have any VOIP gateway. I'm looking for the most workable, cost effective way of avoiding long distance charges and roaming charges while allow clients in KL to call a KL number and clients in SG to call an SG number.

The singtel travel sim allows for the above with the exception of avoiding roaming charges. So it will forward all calls to your SG number so you will pay for your KL clients to call you while you are in SG and the opposite for the SG clients when you are in KL (but all on your SG number). I don't know if there is a voip solution from SG.

You would need to tie this in with a dual sim phone so that you can have both cards active at the same time when you are traveling in MY (I love mine it works great)

I would look at getting Skype's one online number, which clients only pay local rates, depending on their Country of residence.

You must buy the number, but people can contact you by landline, and mobile, at local rates and if they are skype members i guess it's free.

Price is around 17 Euro for 3 months, though maybe you can get a better deal over one year

Thanks, KSL. I have Skype numbers inbound and outbound. But Skype does not offer MY or SG numbers. Need an alternative.

i think it is possible but you will need a virtual VoIP number from singapore and malaysia but when you are in either country, your mobile will need to be data enable and able to run a softphone software (SIP, STUN, etc). also note that some telco will block VoIP traffic on your mobile.

i do use a virtual VoIP number but use the softphone software on a PC rather than on a mobile.

the problem is this caters to US only. Any services similar for SG/MY?
I've been trying to tackle this problem for a bit now as well. TollFreeForwarding.com was one option with SG numbers but every time I try to sign up they say they are waiting for the government to allow the "release" of additional numbers. Whether or not the sales guy knows what he is actually talking about with regard to releasing numbers is a different story but it seems like there should be a company out there to fill this void.
I'd like to know the limitations keeping companies from offering these types of services available in many other places in the world.

I travel alot to KL as well. Whenever I am in KL, i just need to insert my KL sim card and redirect it to a number that was given to me. So when someone calls me from SG it will be directed to my KL number.

Before I was using Singtel and Mediaring, but i feel its expensive and it doesn't really cater to what I actually need which is "cost saving". I am using this service called "DID Service" from this company Callforeign. Its quite good, the line is clear and its saves me alot of money. And now they also have it on iPhone, i have yet to explore their iPhone version. Will share an update with you all.

Tried their iPhone, overall it's ok. Line was clear and no choppy lines. Just that I need to find a wifi and it can be pretty hard at certain place. Oh well, at least there's something new to try on everyday.
