Milk formula and your experiences

We have used Dumex milk formula ever since our little girl was born and she seemed to love it. Then the health scare with contaminated milk came rolling in and we changed to S26. Ever since then she has been kind of hyperactive and she is so hard to put to sleep at night. We believe it is due to the milk and the contents. S26 seems to have more sugar. We are considering moving back to Dumex.

What is your experiences with the two brands and can you recommend other brands and in case you can, why did you chose that particular brand?

Coming from India, we are a bit cost conscious. We always think from Indian point of view. There kids are given cows milk, if we were there now, that's what we would do.

Formula milk is insanely expensive here. We started out on Nestle Nespray from the age of 1 until 2 and it costs like $12.80 for 600gms, which is the cheapest and it worked well.

Our girl just turned 2 and we have switched to Nestle NAN Kid 4. It costs about 50% more, but still much cheaper than the likes of S26, Pediasure etc. We found that this milk is a bit prone to cause constipation. But we are not 100% sure, its the milk that is causing it, because it has happened like only couple of times in a month.

BTW, Dumex has couple of brands, Dumex Dugro is the cheaper one costs same as Nestle Nespray.

Our daughter has been on S26 almost since birth, going 3 years old now.

She has not been the greatest sleeper in some respects, usually wakes up once or twice in the night, but she goes to bed 7.30pm and gets up around 6am which is not too bad. At least one of the night time waking incidents can be attributed to hunger. She is a terrible eater, it's a struggle at every meal time!

I don't think you can generalise, maybe some milks suit some better than others. Maybe a change of milk brand doesn't help? Better to stick to the same one if possible?

Breast feeding until 12 months, then cows' milk - that's what we did. My daughter practically never got any formula (only a few times in exceptional situations like travelling).
I believe these artificially modified formulas are inferior in everything but marketing, and only help the maker fill his pockets.

My son was on Nestle NAN from birth till about 18 months when I moved to cows milk. I think those forumlas for 4 years olds are a gimmick, by then your child should be on a healthy balanced diet but I imagine it's for the locals to get the kids consuming the 'brain boosting' god knows what that goes in the can.

Although I do give my son the Centrum multi vitamins as he's a very fussy eater and I worry he doesn't get all his nutrients from food. Probably contradicted myself there but buying a months supply of Centrum is cheaper than a months supply of formula milk.

By the way, on that formula, he never had any sleep issues, always slept like a baby.

Yep balanced diet is the key here. My daughter will not eat enough to keep a sparrow alive so we have kept her on the formula milk and vitamin supplements. If she would eat a reasonably balanced diet I would move her to cows milk.

My wife swears by Enfamil/Enfagrow, and is the exact opposite of WD40 and his wife. If it costs more or has .01% more vitamins, it is worth it at any cost for our daughter. I'm much closer to Wd40 on the Tiger/Kiasu-parent scale, but know which battles to choose.

Anyway, wife even makes distinctions between the same brand and formula sold in the US, Singapore, and elsewhere. She insists the US one tastes better (even though the ingredients on the container are the same). I refuse to take part on the taste test, so just give in and order through Amazon.

I gave my baby Dumex, I tried it using their free samples. I see good results for my little girl and glad she has no problem with the milk. As she grows older, I am planning to switch her formula to Dumex milk for toddlers.

Why not Nan Pro ? How old is your kid ?

I'll consider your suggestion, She's 13 months old by the way. I am also worried about switching her from one milk brand to another.
