Premiership Games (Best Bars)

Post by Patrick777 » Thu, 27 Jul 2006 1:18 am

Any bars where Expats congregate to watch the games at weekends? Also do they all charge £6 a pint at the time of games? I've heard some do happy hours but I'm presuming games are around 10pm in Singa and happy hour will be over by then?

Football Bars

As mentioned in a reply on a different thread once the season gets underway you'll find it difficult to find a pub not showing the premierhip.

If you're desperate to share the experience with expats then the obvious choices are Muddy Murphy's at Orchard or the Penny Black on Boat Quay - nice drop of Speckled Hen there. Out my way at Changi Village there is Bambooze or Friends. Chijmes near Raffles City had a big screen last year and they are trying desperatley to get Robertson Quay off the ground so that may have some good booze/screen deals.

Of course they will charge expat prices although last season there were so many early games that you could start watching at happy hour and be so sloshed by the 10pm kick off that you don't care paying over the odds. I understand though that there may not be quite so many lunch time kick offs this season.

In short - don't worry. If you're new to Singapore you'll be surprised at how available English football is here, it is very popular. In fact I reckon I see more football here than I ever did back home. Then again I used to spend Saturday afternoons at Vicarage Road watching Watford - not much football there then!

Penny Black is a liverpool pub apparently and SportzBallz is a tottenham one.

You a watford fan eh, you from those areas? Lived in Barnet before and went to school in Elstree very near to Vicarage Road

Yes, 'fraid so. My UK base is in Oxhey. We used to go and watch Barnet when Watford were away. Look forward to a bit of chat as the season progresses.

I used to be a steward at Barnet! Watching Tottenham games at Sportz Ballz (off beach rd/north bridge rd) but want to find a more neutral venue for other matches. Where do you watch em'?

You boys may well stay up, saw you against Leeds at end of last yr, looked pretty useful (though Leeds were absolute rubbish!). Best of luck against everton may take a point or 3 if you can break their 9 man defence!

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a homeboy these days, Spursmad. My next door neighbour football kaki (Singlish for mate, buddy) was rendered housebound during the World Cup so I rarely venture further out than his place at the moment although I could be tempted out of my shell once in a while.

Muddy Murphy's/Penny Black is as good as anywhere else in the city for neutrals as far as I am aware but of course they focus on the big boys. I'm on their mailing list and I have tried to forward it to you via PM if we're not still classed as newbies for that function. Your location says you are in Chinatown in which case you could try walking up Duxton Hill where there are a lot of bars. Be a little bit careful though (or behave with reckless abandon if you want!) as some of the bars contain Flipovers who will be happy to provide you with company for the evening and in some cases longer. Chijmes (MRT City Hall) had a big screen last year and probably will do so again this.

If you fancy a trip to the wild, wild East, my place is on the way to Changi Village and as well as having a big screen in the coffee shop, Bambooze is popular with expats and Friends Bar also sometimes shows games although it is a smaller place with a smaller screen and you can't always hear the commentary in either of them. Changi Village has a reputation too and I will tell you about it and how to avoid it if you ask me very nicely although some of the other old hands on this site may not be so secretive (or indeed so innocent)!

Sorry, have been offline for some time with a computer problem.

Must confess that I've not actually seen a Spurs game in its entirety yet this season so I'm not in as position to give my "expert" view on them. (Hey if Paul "who hell he?" Masefield can make a living as an ESPN pundit I can call myself expert, right?)

Spurs are playing Watford on Saturday 28th October (Deepavali in Sinagpore). Was in Changi Village last night & can report that you can get a good view at Friends Pub and there is definitely no "some pop folk combination folk duet thrashing out rubbish cover versions". (Nice quote Wahodges!)

Cheesed off about the Hornets result - injury time penalty or not, you don't stay up on hard luck stories.

More Misery at Sportsballz

Post by Rich D » Tue, 03 Oct 2006 9:57 pm

At the start of the season I looked at what Watford needed to do to get 40 points to survive and I came up with needing 9 wins - 6 at home and 3 away.

Of the 6 I reckon we need to win at home we have played 2 already, West Ham and Fulham, but got 2 points only. Now I have been deeply surprised at Tottenham's poor start but in my view we must beat them at the Vic towards the end of this month. Spurs will see the Hornets as a chance to get back on form so it would be a huge psychological blow if we were to miss out against a team with such poor form. Then we must treat the next home game v. Boro as 6 pointer.

No problems if we don't get anything away at Arsenal on 14th Oct as long as its not a stuffing. Mind you, we are playing like the England of the early 90s at the moment - the worse the opposition, the worse we play. Man U, Villa and Bolton brought out the best in us but we managed to make Fulham and West Ham look half decent. So perhaps a surprise point at the Emirates if the defence keeps its wits about it? And please God let van Persie have used up his supply of volleys!!!

With a bit of luck Chris Powell has a chance of making it. After all he was bought for his experience to keep a cool head when its all hands to the pump. Mind you, he had a spot kick given against him when he headed the ball out for a corner versus Everton - so let's all talk soft penalties! :x

Yep, Watford to thump Pompey - that should keep Southsea happy.

Come on, have a heart. We've only got 1 win, they've had 6 already and 3 points could see us out of the bottom 3 if Aresenal and Man U do the business.
